About the project

A large raised timber deck was ready to be replaced as some of the decking boards and the frame were failing. Our clients had maintained the decking well over the years but were ready to replace with a low maintenance option. The size of the current deck was perfect for the garden so a re-built to the same size was requested.

CAD designs & client consultation

Throughout the design process we provide CAD illustrations to demonstrate layout and design options. This helps the client visualise the space we will create.

Below shows the before plan, some design options, which show board orientation and the final design chosen by our clients.

Framing & Foundations

As always we use the best quality materials along with the best methods of build our decks. This includes the framing, this part of a project is often the most complex and time-consuming. A well built frame with the right materials will ensure that the decking lasts as long as (at least) as the 25 year warranty.

We installed a hybrid HDPE/UC4 Timber frame on this build, at 1 end of the deck the frame was very close to the ground so HDPE recycled plastic was used for the framing, this guarantees longevity as the plastic will never rot close to ground like timber could. The other 2/3’s of the deck was built using UC4 Treated then taped timbers, this area of the deck was between 600mm to 2000mm above ground so timber was the ideal framing choice in this area.

The frame was fixed to concrete form foundations using a combination of HDPE plastic posts and UC4 Timber Posts.

Decking board choice and colours

Millboard enhanced grain was chosen as the decking material in Coppered Oak & Antique Oak.

The clients loved the aesthetics of the Millboard range along with the long 25 year warranty. The colours suited the surroundings and landscape perfectly giving a real timber look along with great slip resistant properties and a decking system that is very easily maintained. At 1 end of the deck it is raised nearly 2 metres above ground we installed Millboard Board & Batten Cladding in Antique Oak colour.

Finally, we installed a Glass & Stainless Steel balustrade system.

Detailing

•Antique Oak Bullnose boards were installed to the deck to 3 sides around the deck, this gave the outside edge a contrast to the rest of the deck.

•Mitred corners were used for the deck corners.

•A hidden access gate was designed and installed under the deck to create a great under deck storage area.

Balustrade

•Stainless steel balustrade posts with matching glass clamps.

•11.5mm Toughened & Laminated Bespoke Glass Panels.
