On this design and build project, our clients had high-elevation decking which extended the living space, giving an amazing view of the countryside in the distance.
The old decking was a timber-frame structure with softwood decking boards. As with all decking of this type over the years, the appearance starts to decline and the maintenance of the timber becomes more difficult, so the customers wanted a natural-looking, long-lasting replacement.
As with all our projects at the consultation and design stage, we create a CAD design which illustrates the design that we have discussed with the client along with a board layout which you can see from the image here. The client was wanting a few subtle changes made to the original design, which included deeper, more useful steps which were located more closely aligned to the back door of the house. Whilst moving the steps to the right, this created a more usable space to the left-hand side of the steps, where a table and chairs can now be situated and used.
The foundations for the majority of this deck were created using galvanised steel ground screws, which were mechanically fixed into the ground on which timber UC4 treated posts were fixed to, and in areas of the deck which were below 800 mm of the ground, HDPE recycled plastic posts were used.
For more in-depth reasoning on why we use a specific kind of foundation or framing type, please refer to the post on our website at the following link.
On top of these foundation posts, either HDPE recycled plastic framing was installed, or in places on the deck, we used DuoSpan aluminium framing from Millboard.
Natural-looking timber colours were used in this project, which matched the house’s wall and blended well into the environment. Two colours from Millboard’s enhanced grain range were used on the deck: Coppered Oak on the steps and a Coppered Oak fascia and perimeter bullnosed board on the main deck area, with Ashwood as the main colour.
