About the project

A project of 2 halves. Our clients had big plans for their garden which to start was to replace an existing composite deck with a larger deck which surrounded the outside bar and bridged the gap from the patio. On top of this deck an aluminium pergola was installed with the final piece of the design being the replacement of the timber fencing and the installation of another deck from the back doors up to the 1st deck.

CAD designs & client consultation

A large part of us creating a clients dream deck is getting the materials, colours & design right.

After our initial meet a design was completed for deck 1, the design chosen had a board orientation parallel with the fencing left and right of the garden with a breaker board installed to create a clean look without any cut ends.

Deck 2 was designed with the same colours as deck 1 and we gave a few different ideas of design to create a different look for this deck. After discussion our clients decided on a fantastic unique board layout that worked perfectly with deck 1 and the rest of the garden.

Framing & Foundations

The framing on this project was installed slightly above and below ground. As with all aspects of decking installation we use materials that best suit that specific build. Deck 1 suited a frame that spanned long distances with a profile not too high as the finished deck had to fit under the outdoor bar doors. Millboard DuoSpan Alluvium framing was the choice for this deck.

Deck 2 was built using HDPE recycled plastic framing which offered greater flexibility with the deck board design being complicated, it also offered a great option as it installed below ground level. This frame was constructed using Carpenters Mate Market Leading Framing Screws.

Both frames were installed onto Steel Ground Screws which offers support, and stable base which is environmentally friendly as no concrete is used in this type of foundation.

Decking board choice and colours

Smoked Oak & Burnt Cedar was chosen from the Millboard Enhanced Grain Range.

Detailing

With the design of this deck Smoked Oak was chosen as the main colour for its light grey appearance, whilst also, matching the rest of the colour palette in the garden. As with all of the enhanced grain range from Millboard, every board is moulded from real oak, which gives a real natural appearance to the deck boards.

Hey, second colour was introduced to the outside edges of the decks which was burnt cedar which is still in the grey colour spectrum. However, with it being darker it works fantastically as a complimentary colour.

We also got to introduce a subtle, but effective design on one section of deck 2 in the image below you can see how decking boards have been installed to create an intricate pattern.
