Millboard Golden Oak decking & cladding. 2023

About the project

This project was to remove an old, dangerous softwood deck along with a wooden balustrade and under deck cladding. Our clients requested a composite deck that was of a similar size, which was low maintenance with a natural and contemporary look.

Materials

After our initial meeting and design, the choice was made to go for Millboard decking from the Enhanced Grain range in ‘Golden Oak’. This colour worked really well in the setting against the brick of the house and with the garden as a whole. The timber effect gives a realistic look and the client commented saying “it actually looks better than wood”. These decking boards will continue to look that good for many many years, as Millboard decking comes with a 25 year warranty.

The cladding for under the deck was an opportunity to use a different colour/material that would add aesthetic value to the decking area and to the garden as a whole. The same cladding was used on the step riser into the clients conservatory. On this project we opted for the Millboard Board and Batten cladding for this purpose. The cladding boards are moulded from four individual pieces of timber profile, which creates a truly unique balance for both contemporary and traditional designs. With a tongue and groove profile that only requires fixings through the tongue, so the fixing is hidden. This was our first installing using this particular Millboard product and it truly bringing the finishing touch to this project.

Framing

The framing on this project was a hybrid of HDPE (high density plastic) along with C24 timbers which are UC4 treated. For our to ground contact in certain areas we used a hybrid construction.

Along with this we used fixings from Carpenter Mate and Decking tape from Walter Strong. Carpenters Mate screws sit flush with the wood and ensure a secure yet flexible connection that allows the wood a degree of elasticity to accommodate the stresses and strains of structural movement. The decking tape is used to help protect the timber from water, moisture and weathering.

Glass Balustrade

The final piece of the jigsaw was the balustrade. Due to the height of the deck, a balustrade was needed for health and safety. As the client wanted a minimalistic look then glass was the best option. We used Stainless Spigots  to hold the glass in place and these really do maximise the required minimalistic look.
