Project completion - Woodstock May 2024
Millboard Coppered Oak & Antique decking.
About the project
We were asked by our clients to remove the old timber decking from the back of their house. The old design was elevated from the garden with 2 sets of narrow steps leading down onto the lawn, this created a deck which completely separated itself and the house from the garden.
Our design concept was to re-integrate the garden with the house, via the deck, to create a much better flow between indoor and outdoor living space. We achieved this by creating 1.8m wide steps flowing from the patio doors down to the garden. By removing the 2 sets of steps and replacing with just one allowed for a much larger useable area for seating and socialising. This was engineered without having to increase the footprint of the whole decked area.
CAD designs & client consultation
Throughout the design process we provide CAD illustrations to demonstrate layout and design options. This helps the client visualise the space we will create.
Below shows the before plan as well as a few design options for a our clients to choose and the final design chosen.
Framing & Foundations
The framing on this project was installed around 1.1m above the garden and just above the old patio.
HDPE recycled plastic framing was used, which was constructed using Carpenters Mate Framing Screws. The frame was then fixed to timber posts where the frame was 1.1m above ground and fixed to HDPE posts where the framing was situated above the old paving.
As always our timber posts don’t come into contact with the ground as they are fixed onto a raised concrete forms using galvanised shoes.
Decking board choice and colours
Coppered Oak & Antique Oak was chosen from the Millboard Enhanced Grain Range.
Detailing
With the design of this deck, Coppered Oak was chosen as the main colour using both widths of boards available (126mm & 176mm). As with all of the enhanced grain range from Millboard, every board is moulded from real oak, which gives a real natural appearance to the deck boards. Using the two different widths of boards allowed us to use introduce a subtle but effective design to the decking area by placing the boards in a random pattern, which offers a unique look and feel to the finished project. We also installed ‘breaker boards’ to create a seamless look to the decking surface.
A second colour was introduced to the outside edges of the deck which was Antique Oak as a Bullnose for the perimeter of the deck and step treads.
Due to the height of the deck we installed Antique Oak Board and Batten cladding from Millboard to hide the underside of the deck. The colour choose is still in the brown colour spectrum, however with it being darker it works fantastically as a complimentary colour. To finish off the build we installed a low-profile Black Steel side-fixed balustrade / railing.
